Are you ignorant, too?
Sometimes, when someone says or writes something that is SO outlandish, it requires a response. If you have not heard about a recent article by Georgetown Univ. Law professor, Robin L. West, I encourage you to look it up. I won’t “honor” her with a link to her article on my blog, but I’ve read the article and could not believe the unbelievable LIES this woman wrote about her totally wacked-out views of homeschooling!!!
She thinks we’re a bunch of ignorant, isolated, abusive fundamentalists that choose to homeschool our kids so we can mistreat our children and turn them into political activists. Now, I have no problem with my children getting involved in politics…the Lord knows we need some people with sense in our government…but her other statements drove me to create the video above.
I hope you enjoy it. If you do, PLEASE share it with your friends, hit the “Tweet Me” button, post a link on your Facebook account, email it… Help spread the word that homeschoolers ARE “ignorant”…but NOT in the ways the crazy anti-homeschool people THINK we are! The lies about homeschoolers have to be stopped!
Ok…I’m going to step off my soap box now and let my blood pressure get back to normal! :o) LOL!!
Have a great day!

P.S. I am still working on the project I talked about in my last video about breaking through my fears! I am SO excited about it and KNOW you’re going to love it! Stay tuned…I’ll give you some real details about it next week.
P.P.S. Don’t forget to leave your comments below!

Hi Susan,
I went to school with your husband, Michael. He knows me and my wife, Kimberly. Actually, he introduced us. :-)
We also homeschool. When folks ask why, we make a few points:
- The schools where my kids would attend have metal detectors because they are needed. How is wanting my child to be safe being ignorant?
- The school where my kids would attend have been on the failing list for years and that’s not going to change any time soon. So the likelihood of them getting a solid education at those schools is not very high. How is wanting my child to have a solid education being ignorant?
- Having tried to care for a child who lost her guardian who was in public school, I was amazed at how much time was spent practicing for the standardized tests. They weren’t getting real knowledge. They were learning how to beat the test. How is wanting my children to be able to do well on a standardized test because they know the fundamental knowledge and not techniques for beating the test being ignorant? (oh, and we test every year using the Iowa standardized tests.)
- My wife is a committed teacher to our children. And she happens to carry an M.Ed. (in school psychology, but a bulk of that curriculum is on learning styles and the like). Many of the teachers my kids would go to are not as educated as she is and if she were to engage them on learning theory and its practical application they would become lost in the first five minutes. So how is wanting my children receiving education from the best trained person for the job being ignorant?
I could keep going, but after those arguments, most folks see the point. There’s more, and I have had to delve into the rest of it once or twice, but afterwards I don’t think I’ve had a single person who seriously considered the arguments to say they still thought we were wrong.
Thanks Brian!
I’ve found that if most people actually sit down and consider the REAL reasons why people homeschool, it just makes sense for their families! The problem is that the people who are against homeschooling don’t want to consider that some people actually LIKE being with their kids and having a positive influence on them.
But maybe that’s just something I tell myself to make me feel better… probably not. :o)
Love, love, LOVE the video! Thanks for posting it. I’d like to see the original article though, could you share where I could find it?
BTW, I enjoy your blog..it’s my first visit here, but it looks well organized!

Thanks Laura. Just google this: Robin West “The Harms of Homeschooling” and you should find it. Not too keen on putting a link off my blog to her stuff, but also, the HSLDA site has info on it here: http://www.hslda.org/docs/news/201001050.asp
Glad you enjoyed the video! Share it with others!
